Christmas and New Year in Amsterdam, with a quiet massage in your room
The days between Christmas and New Year have their own character in Amsterdam: lights on the canals, closed shops, cold evenings and, on the last night, fireworks everywhere. A massage in the warmth of your room suits that week well, if it is booked with care.
While you read
Nothing here asks you to decide anything. The whole page can be read and left alone.
Christmas and New Year in Amsterdam attract many experienced travellers who would rather spend the holidays somewhere quieter than home. The city in late December is dark early and lit beautifully, with illuminated works along the canals and candles in the windows of the old houses. Many restaurants close on Christmas Day, the museums keep reduced hours, and the evenings are long. An evening in your hotel room with a therapist is one of the more comfortable ways to spend one of them.
Why the holidays are peak dates
The house treats the days from Christmas to New Year as peak dates, together with King's Day, Pride, the Amsterdam Dance Event and very large conference weeks. On a peak date every booking carries a deposit of half the fee, paid once you accept the reply, with the balance paid on arrival. The fee itself does not change: the rates on every profile are the same in December as in any other month. The deposit entry sets out the full rule.
Booking Christmas and New Year in Amsterdam early
Evenings in this week are popular, and the therapists set their own hours, so some take the holidays off. Write a few days ahead if you can, naming the evening you want. Christmas Eve and the evening of Christmas Day tend to be quiet in the hotels, and a booking for either is usually easy to arrange if it is made in advance.
New Year's Eve
The last night of the year is a special case. Fireworks are let off across the city from early evening until well after midnight, the streets near the canals and squares are crowded, and taxis are hard to find. If you want a session on New Year's Eve, book an hour well before ten or plan the overnight, and expect the arrival to need careful timing. The quieter choice is New Year's Day, when the city sleeps late and the evening is calm.
A length for a winter evening
Winter evenings are long, and many guests use them for a longer booking: two hours after an early dinner, or three on a night with nothing else planned. A session of three hours or more carries a deposit in any month, so in this week the rule is the same whichever length you pick.
Warmth in December
Hotel rooms in old buildings can be cold in winter, with tall windows and draughts. Turn the heating up an hour ahead and draw the heavy curtains. The note on a cold evening and a warm room applies just as much in December.
