A spring trip to Amsterdam in tulip season, and a massage at the end of the day

Spring brings the largest wave of experienced travellers to Amsterdam: the bulb fields are in flower, the gardens south of the city open, and the days lengthen quickly. It also brings tired legs and full hotels, and both shape how an evening booking works.

While you read

Nothing here asks you to decide anything. The whole page can be read and left alone.

A spring trip to Amsterdam, between the end of March and the middle of May, usually includes at least one day in the bulb fields. Coaches and trains carry visitors to the flower gardens and the striped fields beyond, and the day involves hours of walking on gravel paths, standing in queues and leaning over beds of tulips with a camera. By the time the coach returns to the city, most visitors have the legs and the lower back of a long hike. That evening is the one to book.

The evening after the bulb fields

Write in the morning, before you leave, for an hour that evening; the reply will be waiting when you return. Ninety minutes is the usual choice for this day, with attention on the calves, the thighs and the lower back. Ask for firm pressure on the legs if you like it and lighter work elsewhere. Kneeling and crouching for photographs leave the knees and hips stiff as well, so mention them if they ache, and take a warm shower before she arrives to loosen everything a little. The page on a slow full body session describes how the time is divided.

Busy dates on a spring trip to Amsterdam

Spring is popular, and hotels fill from Easter onwards. King's Day, at the end of April, is one of the house's peak dates, when every booking carries a deposit of half the fee and the city is packed with street parties and boats on every canal. The days around it are lively too. If your trip includes King's Day, book well ahead or choose the evening before or after; the note on the busy dates of the year explains why.

Spring rooms

April evenings in Amsterdam can still be cold, especially after a sunny day. Hotel heating can be turned down in spring, so check the thermostat before she arrives. Rooms with tall windows lose warmth quickly once the sun has gone.

Light in spring

By May the sun sets late, and an evening session may begin in daylight. Draw the curtains if you prefer a darker room, or leave them open for the light on the canals. Either works; tell her which you prefer during the slow start.

Arrival

In central Amsterdam she arrives forty to sixty minutes after you confirm. On the busiest spring weekends the window still holds, though traffic around the station can be slow.

Questions this raises

Should I book before the trip if I am coming in tulip season?

For a specific evening, yes, especially near Easter or King's Day. A booking more than a day ahead carries a deposit of half the fee.

Can I book on the evening I return from the bulb fields?

Yes. Write in the morning for that evening and give an approximate return time.

Will she work mainly on the legs if I ask?

Yes. Say so during the slow start and the session can concentrate on the legs and lower back.

When you are ready

One message with the district and the hour is the whole first step. The reply carries a name, a time and the total.
